During WW2 and throughout the post-war years, commandos of all generations returning from operations, established the tradition of depositing 'memorabilia' at the Spean Bridge Hotel. In 2014, new owners of the establishment threatened the entire loss of what had become a 'commando museum', including many priceless and irreplaceable historical artefacts.
A joint Commando Association (CA) and Royal Marines Association (RMA) intervention rescued the items - to storage!
The MISSION of the ICHT is to establish and maintain an International Commando Heritage Centre (ICHC), close to the Commando Memorial, in order to PROTECT, PRESERVE, PRESENT & PROMOTE the history and heritage of UK & Allied Nations Commandos and Special Forces that trace their antecedents to WW2 training in Scotland and the Commando Basic Training Centre at Achnacarry.
Although the ICHT team remain focused on the mission, it will consider short, medium and long-term opportunities. Given the start point which establishes that the view from the there Commando Memorial across the training area and there Nevis Range to be sacrosanct, the ultimate aspiration considers a discreet facility in front of the monument to provide the 'gold standard' solution.
Conceptual illustrations of such a facility depict a semi-subterranean heritage centre, virtually invisible from all road approaches. State of the art design will ensure that it would be constructed with minimal carbon footprint and little or no impact on the environment. Most important is that no aspect of the construction would impair the clear views in all directions from the Memorial site.
The ICHT are now seeking foundation partnerships and corporate and individual support to assist in this 3 Phase £7.4 million project.
